Escape the crowds and experience the untamed beauty of Phen Wildlife Sanctuary, a hidden gem directly connected to Kanha Tiger Reserve. This 111 sq. km micro-core offers a unique and affordable safari experience, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of Central India.
Phen acts as a crucial corridor, facilitating the free movement of wildlife between Kanha and the forests of Chhattisgarh, including Bhoramdev and even connecting to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. This vital link makes Phen an integral part of the larger ecosystem.
A day trip to Phen reveals breathtaking landscapes and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. While tigers and leopards roam these forests, just as they do in Kanha, Phen is particularly rewarding for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The sanctuary’s diverse flora and fauna create stunning photographic backdrops, perfect for capturing the essence of the Indian wilderness.
Recent conservation efforts, including the relocation of villages, have transformed areas within Phen into thriving grasslands, especially beneficial for herbivores like the Bara Singha, which Kanha aims to reintroduce. The increased spotted deer population further supports the ecosystem’s health.
For those seeking a more intimate connection with nature, Phen offers a serene environment for Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. Immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere, breathe in the fresh air, and let the sounds of the forest soothe your soul.
Those seeking a more affordable way to experience Kanha’s wilderness can enjoy a full day of exploration in Phen, at a fraction of the cost. It’s a chance to experience the wild heart of India, a true extension of Kanha, where every moment is a potential wildlife encounter.
Do keep an eye out for tigers too; with a touch of luck, you might see one or more.
